Esperanza Renace , is a book about Esperanza Ortega who is a wealthy girl in Aguascalientes, Mexico living a happy life with her family. However, things took a bit of a dark turn when unexpectedly her father Sixto, was killed by some bandits on her 13th birthday. The death of her father unexpectedly leads her mother Ramona to get threats from her father's jealous stepbrother. Ramona denies the jealous stepbrothers order of their land that results into their home getting burnt down, and them fleeing to California. There life in California isn't like their life back in Mexico, they face many challenges like discrimination, labor work, and her mother falling ill. Esperanza then slowly learns to value hard work, flexibility, and the importance of community.       I chose this book for my blog post, as this book was my way to escape during some difficult times, and it became one of my favorite novels. Esperanza rising gave me a lot of thoughts a...

Bud, Not Buddy: by Christopher Paul Curtis

Image
I have read Christopher Paul Curtis’s “Bud, Not Buddy” a few times, and each time I notice new details that make me enjoy it even more. The story happens in Michigan during the Great Depression. 10 year old Bud Caldwell is an orphan and the main character. He carries a small suitcase filled with memories of his deceased mother. After an abusive experience with a foster family, Bud chooses to run away and look for a man named Herman E. Calloway. Herman is a musician who Bud believes to be his father. Bud’s trip across Michigan is hard. He goes through homelessness, racism, and hunger. When Bud eventually reaches Herman E. Calloway meets a strict old man who claims he is \ not Bud's dad. After staying with the man they find out that Calloway is not his father, but he is his grandfather. After this Calloway and his band become bud’s new family. “Bud, Not Buddy” is a heartwarming and intense book that can be read quickly. I would recommend others to read this book if they are looking f...

Dragon Ball Volume 1

Image
Dragon Ball  By Akira Toriyama          It think a lot of people are aware of who this is and what the story is about. But if you dont I will give a quick rundown. Dragon Ball follows a monkey tailed boy Goku, he lives alone until he meets the a girl who is an inventor, Bulma, who is on a mission to find the seven Dragon Balls that summon a Dragon the grants wishes. Along the way they meet other people, including a guy named Master Roshi who trains goku in martial arts to become stronger.     This book was turned into an anime and has many continuities. It begins with Dragon Ball then expands into Dragon Ball Z and so on. I personally like Dragon Ball because it is a nice way to get a little escape from the real world, per example you would never think about a kid with a monkey tail riding a golden cloud to a cave to find a magical Dragon Ball that will summon a green dragon to grant you wishes. Or t...

She loves to cook, and she loves to eat

Image
She loves to cook, and she loves to eat  by Sakaomi Yuzaki She loves to cook, and she loves to eat is a lighthearted, very wholesome manga surrounding food and identity. The story follows a woman named Yamoto who uses cooking to destress (but makes way more than what she can eat) and Kasuga, who has an unusually large appetite. The two cook and eat together, with intense admiration that blooms into romance on both sides.  Recently turned into a J-drama, this yuri has gotten quite popular recently. While there are certain things about the manga that annoy me (Ending after the relationship is established), there are so many more good things that made me want to savor the meager 5 volumes published.  The biggest reason I liked this manga so much is because of the way it talks about eating. With eating disorders running rampant around the real world, this series felt refreshing to read. Young people are pushed to eating disorders, especially online. Whether it be a "What I ea...
