She loves to cook, and she loves to eat
by Sakaomi Yuzaki
She loves to cook, and she loves to eat is a lighthearted, very wholesome manga surrounding food and identity. The story follows a woman named Yamoto who uses cooking to destress (but makes way more than what she can eat) and Kasuga, who has an unusually large appetite. The two cook and eat together, with intense admiration that blooms into romance on both sides.
Recently turned into a J-drama, this yuri has gotten quite popular recently. While there are certain things about the manga that annoy me (Ending after the relationship is established), there are so many more good things that made me want to savor the meager 5 volumes published.
The biggest reason I liked this manga so much is because of the way it talks about eating. With eating disorders running rampant around the real world, this series felt refreshing to read. Young people are pushed to eating disorders, especially online. Whether it be a "What I eat in a day as a fatty" on your for you page, diet pill advertisements with models, or simply comparing yourself to others and asking why don't I look like them?, we are consistently exposed to things that urge us to hate our bodies. In She loves to cook, and she loves to eat, they acknowledge how that mindset can hurt others, especially your children. Yuzaki carries this yuri on not shaming people for how much or how little someone eats, with characters with incredibly varying appetites found all over the book. There are many reasons why someone might eat more (or less!) than someone else, and having the characters understand that about each other and cater to those needs and preferences was so nice to see in a wave of shame around eating.
I love this manga!! Read it if you have time!!!!!!!
