The Motley Fool Investment Guide for Teens

The Motley Fool Investment Guide for Teens is a long and silly name for a not-terribly-long but somewhat silly book. As the name suggests, it’s an investment guide aimed to teach young readers everything from what a stock is to evaluating one using a Price to Earnings Ratio (P/E).

When I first started the book I was concerned that it was going to be overly dense and I would lose interest within a few pages. I was pleasantly surprised that the writers knew their intended audience well and kept it interesting with jokes and quotes from other young readers.

The book was a great introduction to the world of investing. I loved how it introduced me to many new terms, strategies, and important lessons. It showed the power of compounding interest and the danger of credit card debt. These are lessons that everyone should know, especially younger people as youth is the greatest asset when investing. One of these lessons was how amazing ROTH IRAs are. I recommend researching on your own or better yet reading the book if you have any questions on these topics.

The only issue I had with the book was that it was written about twenty years ago so some of the information was outdated. Numbers given especially on college and home loans don't show today's cost due to inflation. Although this area wasn’t great, the fundamentals were, and I don't see them becoming outdated anytime soon.

Overall I recommend this to all readers. It gives a firm base of financial knowledge that you can build on throughout your life. Thank you for reading.
