Wonder By R.J Palacio

Today, May 15th, is a day before I turn 15. Looking back at my childhood books, I came across a special book that made exploring new places and overcoming fears special. The book overall helped me realize that growing up and changing sometimes opens opportunities to new things and new people. Not everyone may like you but you will definetly find your people, and I feel that message is very important as you get older.

Wonder is a coming-of-age novel written by R.J Palacio, about a little boy, Auggie, who was born with facial difficulties and had 27 surgeries by the time he started 5th grade. He lives in New York with his Mother, Father, His sister, and Daisy, his dog. He explains how it is to be homeschooled by his mother and how he enjoys spending time at home. Auggie was exposed to middle school, and he met some children as they showed him around his school. On Auggie's first day, he is terrified, and because of his facial difficulties, he gets bullied by a kid named Julian. Jack, a kid in his class that he met while they showed him the school, stood by his side, and they became very close. In the book, there are 8-9 parts that are dedicated to different characters that explains there difficulties and how even if people don't show their true feelings, there is still a lot going on with them. My favorite part of the novel is at the end when Auggie and his class are taken on a field trip and as Jack and Auggie leave to the restroom they start getting bothered by some random high schoolers then the guys from his class make the effort to help him. This scene, is really moving because it lets readers know that your differences will always be accepted by your true friends and people who care about you.
